What is Hypno-Oncology?

Hypnotherapy as Support During and After Cancer Treatment

A cancer diagnosis changes everything. The treatment that follows — surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy — can be as gruelling as the illness itself. And even when treatment ends, the emotional and physical aftermath can be profound and long-lasting.

Hypno-oncology is a specialist area of clinical hypnotherapy that uses evidence-informed hypnosis techniques to support people at every stage of the cancer journey — from diagnosis through active treatment and into life beyond.

It doesn't treat cancer. But it can make an enormous difference to the experience of having it.

What is hypno-oncology?

Hypno-oncology combines clinical hypnotherapy with an understanding of oncology — the physical, psychological and emotional landscape of cancer and its treatment. It draws on a growing body of research showing that hypnotherapy can significantly reduce the distress, anxiety and physical symptoms that so often accompany cancer treatment.

The approach recognises that the mind and body are not separate systems. How we experience illness — the fear, the uncertainty, the physical discomfort — affects our physiology, our immune function, our recovery and our quality of life. Working with the mind is not an alternative to medical treatment. It's a complement to it — one that can meaningfully improve outcomes and wellbeing.

Hypno-oncology is used alongside conventional cancer treatment, not instead of it. It works best as part of an integrated approach that includes your oncology team, GP and other healthcare professionals.

What does the evidence say?

The evidence base for hypnotherapy in cancer care has grown substantially over the past two decades. Research has demonstrated that hypnotherapy can:

  • Significantly reduce anticipatory nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy

  • Reduce procedural anxiety — the anxiety before and during medical procedures including cannulation, scans and biopsies

  • Improve sleep quality during treatment

  • Reduce pain perception during and after procedures

  • Lower levels of anxiety and distress throughout treatment

  • Improve quality of life during active treatment and beyond

The NHS acknowledges hypnotherapy as a valid complementary approach, and a number of cancer centres in the UK and US now offer hypnotherapy as part of their integrative oncology programmes. The Penny Brohn UK centre and Maggie's Centres both incorporate mind-body approaches to cancer support.

Who is hypno-oncology for?

Hypno-oncology can be helpful at any stage of the cancer journey:

At diagnosis A cancer diagnosis triggers an acute stress response — shock, fear, disbelief, overwhelm. Hypnotherapy can help regulate the nervous system during this period, reducing the intensity of the anxiety response and supporting clearer thinking and decision-making.

During active treatment Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery all place enormous demands on the body and mind. Hypnotherapy can help with:

  • Anticipatory anxiety before treatment sessions

  • Nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy

  • Anxiety during medical procedures

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Fatigue and energy management

  • Pain management

  • Maintaining a sense of agency and control during a process that can feel very disempowering

Between treatment cycles The periods between treatment cycles — waiting, recovering, preparing for the next round — can be psychologically very difficult. Hypnotherapy provides tools for managing uncertainty, reducing rumination and maintaining emotional equilibrium.

After treatment ends Counterintuitively, the end of active treatment can be one of the hardest times. The structure of treatment disappears, the close contact with the medical team reduces, and the expectation to "get back to normal" can feel impossibly at odds with how you actually feel. Many people experience significant anxiety, low mood or post-traumatic stress in the aftermath of cancer treatment.

Hypnotherapy can support the transition out of treatment — processing what has happened, managing fear of recurrence, rebuilding confidence in your body, and finding a way forward.

Fear of recurrence Fear of cancer recurrence is one of the most common and persistent difficulties for people who have completed treatment. It can range from background anxiety to intrusive thoughts and hypervigilance around physical symptoms. Hypnotherapy can help reduce the intensity of this fear and develop a more balanced relationship with uncertainty.

What does a hypno-oncology session involve?

Sessions are gentle, relaxed and entirely tailored to where you are in your journey and what you need. There is no pressure to talk about things you're not ready to discuss, and no agenda other than supporting your wellbeing.

A typical session might include:

  • A conversation about how you're feeling and what's most present for you right now

  • Relaxation and nervous system regulation techniques

  • Clinical hypnosis — a deeply relaxing state of focused awareness in which we work with the unconscious mind to reduce anxiety, reframe fear responses, and build inner resources

  • Personalised suggestions and imagery tailored to your specific situation and goals

  • Self-hypnosis techniques to use between sessions

Sessions take place in person at my therapy room in Leatherhead, Surrey, or online via video call — which many clients find particularly convenient during treatment when energy and mobility may be limited.

Is hypno-oncology safe during cancer treatment?

Yes — hypnotherapy is a safe, gentle and non-invasive approach that can be used alongside all conventional cancer treatments without interaction or contraindication. It involves no medication, no physical intervention and no risk.

It is always important to let your oncology team know about any complementary therapies you are using, and I always recommend that clients work with their medical team rather than independently of it.

A note on what hypno-oncology is not

Hypno-oncology is not a cure for cancer, and it makes no claims to treat the disease itself. Anyone suggesting that hypnotherapy or any other complementary therapy can cure cancer is making claims that are not supported by evidence and that could cause harm by diverting people from evidence-based medical treatment.

What hypno-oncology offers is genuine, evidence-informed support for the psychological and physical experience of cancer and its treatment — support that can significantly improve quality of life, reduce suffering and help people feel more resourced and in control during an extraordinarily difficult time.
